2020 Annual Report
THANK YOU Lawrence Township community! For 29 years, your ongoing and generous support has made the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) what it is today. Together, we accomplish great things on behalf of our public school students.
The LTEF raises funds from individuals, local businesses, corporations, and foundations for programs that foster excellence, creativity, and achievement in education for all students in Lawrence Township Public Schools (LTPS). Through grant requests from teachers and school administrators, the LTEF funds programs that will have a substantial and lasting impact on LTPS students.
Thanks to your past generosity, in the 2019-2020 academic year, the LTEF gave approximately $206,000 to LTPS for 76 grants.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has presented challenges for everyone. During this difficult time, (the) LTEF continued to be a rock in the foundation of the Lawrence Township Public Schools.”

When schools closed in March, the LTEF immediately began to address the impact that COVID-19 has on us as an organization and public education in Lawrence Township. We established a committee made up of members of our board of trustees to identify issues and risks the pandemic creates and how best to respond to them.
From the beginning of the pandemic, the LTEF sought to work with school administrators to identify emerging needs based on the crisis. Public education faces unprecedented challenges today as our school leaders, teachers, and students navigate the largest disruption ever to education. While the challenges are unmatched, the LTEF has remained committed to our mission and to LTPS students and staff.
In early April, the LTEF gave an unbudgeted grant to LTPS of $26,085 for the purchase of 100 Google Chromebooks. This grant ensured that teaching and learning in Lawrence could continue remotely for students who otherwise wouldn’t have access to educational opportunities online. This fall we furthered our pledge to support our educators during this difficult time and funded thousands of dollars in grants to directly address the needs created by the pandemic, including support for outdoor learning spaces, projects that enhance both remote and in-school learning and programs that address social and emotional growth, and equity and inclusion.

This year, we are seeing an unprecedented impact on public education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shifts in learning models to incorporate remote learning, along with drastic state budget cuts have placed an undue strain on our schools. At the same time, this unmatched era of uncertainty creates a great need for resources that foster connection during periods of isolation, create unity during moments of distress, and keep the mind, body, and spirit healthy. The LTEF remains dedicated to funding these extremely important initiatives during this challenging time.
AREAS OF IMPACT
EQUITY & INCLUSION
We know that our mission can only be fully achieved when access and opportunity to education is available to all students regardless of background. We remain focused on equity and inclusion especially during this moment when our country is seeking to address systemic racism and longstanding educational inequities. We are proud to have funded many grants that support equity and inclusion, and we are fully committed to funding more of this important work in the future. Explore a complete list of grants that benefit equity and inclusion initiatives.
“Lawrence Township Public Schools would not be afforded the opportunity to truly move forward to becoming an anti-racist school district without the support of the Lawrence Township Education Foundation.”
STEM (Science, technology, Engineering & mathematics) Training & Programming
It’s obvious that teaching STEM develops interest in the STEM fields. But, did you know that teaching STEM in our classrooms helps to teach problem solving, helps close the gender gap, and develops practical preparedness? Explore a complete list of grants that benefit STEM education initiatives.
Arts & Cultural Enrichment
While arts and cultural education provide a window into entertainment and opportunities for enrichment, they’re an essential opportunity for our students to engage in broader context with the potential for deep and profound meaning. These programs have a remarkable impact on students’ academic, social, and emotional outcomes. They also serve to create positive social environments which has proven results in greater civic participation and gradual residency growth; reduction of neighborhood, ethnic, and class divisions; and lowers truancy, delinquency, and poverty rates. Explore a complete list of grants that benefit ARTS education initiatives.
Classroom Technology & Resources
Technology & resources for the classroom improve engagement by: incorporating different learning styles; boosting knowledge retention; facilitating individual as well as collaborative learning; and building useful life skills. “LTPS denounces racism and injustice and is committed to fighting against the damage caused by hate in all forms. The unrest in our community calls on LTPS to help the community understand and define the issues we face and educate the community on ways we can work together to combat them. LTPS endeavors to hold an intentional conversation about the implications of systemic racism, develop a plan to combat its evils, and subsequently, take a leadership role in the collective actions of our community to move Lawrence Township toward real healing.
The Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) has been instrumental in their commitment to supporting LTPS in advancing their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts. A $10,000 grant has enabled the district to hire DEI consultants Val Brown, and Rebekah Cordova, from Teaching Tolerance to train administration and Equity Warriors. Equity Warriors subsequently presented training on Creating Joy in the Classrooms for all LTPS staff. Equity Warriors will continue to provide PD on equity and sponsor a district-wide book club. This year, LTEF has also funded Books and Beyond, $2205 for multicultural books at LES, and $7,500 for Keith Hawkins- Day of Understanding to provide assemblies at LMS. All that LTEF does supports the advancement of cultural knowledge and literacy. LTPS would not be afforded the opportunity to truly move forward to becoming an anti-racist school district without the support of the Lawrence Township Education Foundation.”
— Erika Smoots, 3rd Grade Teacher at Ben Franklin & Equity Warrior
“Although the foundation is trying to figure out how things are going to work in these challenging times, they made sure they were there for our staff and most importantly our students.”
We need your support more than ever. When you donate to the LTEF, your gift stays right here in your community… directly impacting the education of Lawrence Township children. Whether our schools are remote, in person or hybrid, we are in this together. Only with your investment, can the LTEF continue to fund amazing programs.
Please give a gift of any size today.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Best wishes for a safe and healthy 2021.
